Creon is the Tragic Hero in Sophocles Antigone Essay

Creon is the Tragic Hero of Antigone nbsp; When the title of a play is a characters name, it is normally assumed that the character is the protagonist of the play. In Sophocles Antigone, most people probably believe Antigone to be the tragic heroine, even after they have finished watching the play. It may be argued, however, that Creon, not Antigone, is the tragic character. When we examine the nature and concept of the Greek Tragedy and what it means to be a tragic character, it becomes clear that Creon is indeed the tragic hero of the play Antigone. nbsp; First, take into account the timeframe in which Antigone was written. During the time of Sophocles, women were considered second-class citizens. They would not even†¦show more content†¦Also, at the end of the play it is customary for the tragic hero to have lost everything, to be reduced to nothing. At the end of Antigone, Creon had lost his kingdom, his son, his wife, and his will to live, but is doomed to live on in his pain. Antigone loses her life, but it is not a loss in vain, for she did accomplish what she set out to do. It is questionable as to whether Antigone was seeking martyrdom, but she certainly did attain it, dying for her beliefs. nbsp; The most important characteristic of the tragic hero is the tragic flaw, the one attribute that causes the inevitable downfall of the character. It is argued that Antigones tragic flaw was stubbornness. She is called stubborn in the play by Creon and also by the chorus. Yet, some would call her steadfast, rather than stubborn. A stubborn person would continue to argue even after he or she realized they were wrong. For Antigone, no such realization was made. In her own eyes, the eyes of the people, and even the eyes of the gods, Antigone was certainly in the right. Creon, on the other hand, possessed a classic flaw, hubris, or excessive pride. Because of his pride, Creon could not hear the sense spoken by his son, or the blind prophet Teresius. He could not let Antigone go unpunished for her crime for fear of looking weak to his kingdom. Thus his own bad decisions mixed with fate caused his downfall. Days letter in my opinion is one of the best zombie films that has been produced in my generation and revalidated the Zombie genre. This is one of my favorites because of its intriguing story line and a great acting performance by all characters. 28 days later provides a plethora of horror engineering, social attitudes, as well as social critique. We will write a custom essay sample on Days later analysis or any similar topic only for you Order Now Released in 2002, 28 Days later draws its viewers in right from the start. At the beginning of the film we see a group of PETA extremists breaking into what seems to be an animal testing facility. This group of people who are breaking into the facility to free a group of monkeys who are being used as science experiments and being injected with what is called the â€Å"Rage† virus. As the group goes to break the monkeys out of their fiberglass cages, a scientist who works at the facility catches them in the act. Here is where us viewers are first introduced (briefly) to the rage virus. The scientist warns them that the monkeys are infected with Rage and that what they are doing is extremely dangerous. The scientist begs them not to open the cages but ultimately they end up doing it anyway. The female in the group opens the cage and the infected monkey runs out and attacks the group where the virus first begins to spread. The rest of the film shows Jim as he embarks on his journey though post-apocalyptic London. Jim wakes up naked in a hospital bed where he has no idea where he is. After he detaches all of the hoses and wires from his body he ventures out into the rest of the hospital where he discovers that something is right. Later in the film Jim runs into a few more survivors and rest of the film shows them making the trip to a military stronghold that they heard about on a radio broadcast. 8 Days later is without a doubt a film that revalidated the zombie genre. While the zombies in this film aren’t what the type of zombie fans are used to seeing, this film is still extremely terrifying! 28 Days Later employs horror engineering techniques to add to the mass amounts of â€Å"scariness† that already exists throughout the film. The first horror engineering technique that is used throughout this film is formlessness. Formlessness is focusing a little more on the creatures appearances throughout horror films. In this case formlessness is employed to make these flesh hungry zombies even scarier than they already are. The zombies in 28 Days later are extremely terrifying not only because they want to eat the uninfected’ flesh but mainly because of their appearance. Like I said before, the zombies in this film aren’t like zombies fans of this genre are used to seeing. They are dirty, they are deformed, and they are fast†¦ Really fast. When these zombies are chasing their prey, they sprint fast as lightning and their arms sway in a fluid motion. This is a small detail that adds massive amounts of horror into the film. There is Just something about these zombie’s fluid body motions that makes them so scary. Another horror engineering technique that was employed frequently throughout the film is mastication. The concept of Mastication is the creature in the specific film involving swarms, crowding, and teeming to overrun anyone that is not infected with the rage virus. Just about every there is a scene with zombies in it (aside from the one that’s chained up) there is an extremely large number of them that require the uninfected to take immediate action. The zombies in this film are already scary enough, but with a group of at least 20 of them chasing after Selene, Jim and the others in the group of uninfected. One scene in particular that is absolutely petrifying is when the Jim and co. Car breaks down in the traffic tunnel. As the tire is being changed we see tunnel rats running in a group the opposite direction. Soon after that Jim notices the silhouettes of the zombies’ shadows on the tunnel walls running in their direction. Things don’t seem too alarming at first but when the zombies come in sight there is more than a few of them, there is a group of 20+ zombies in an all-out sprint running toward them. Luckily the group barely escapes but, that scene alone was enough to get viewers blood pumping! Mastication makes this film even scarier than it already is, because one of these zombies alone is scary enough let alone a group of 20 or more! In this film there are also social attitudes that are present. One of the more prominent social attitudes that are present in this film is the views on modern bio power. In the beginning of the film we see the infected test subjects that happen to be monkeys. It is unknown why the monkeys are infected with the rage virus in the first place but it seems as if scientists were trying to come up with up with a cure for the rage virus where the experiment looked to be ailing because of all of the test subjects that were present in the lab. 8 Days Later has a negative view to this modern borrower that is being used. It seems Danny Bayle and Alex Garland (Director and Writer) were trying to send a message that the modern evolution of borrower can be risky business if we aren’t careful. 28 Days later was a clear depiction of what life would be like if the use of borrower wasn’t carefully handled. In the case of the film scientists were not careful because of the way a small gro up of PETA enthusiasts were able to sneak into the science facility and let the rage iris lose. It would be extremely difficult to imagine Danny Bayle and Alex Garland directing and writing a movie where modern borrower is a raging success, probably because it would be difficult for borrower to have that type of outcome. Other social views that are in this film are the shifting attitudes towards gender. One of the first characters that are met in this film happens to be an African British female by the name of Selene. She and another male are the first two people that Jim meets right when he gets out of the hospital and begins to wander the streets of London. For the iris half of the film, there is a positive social attitude towards females. Selene is a walking zombie killing machine and is extremely knowledge on how to take care of her self in post-apocalyptic times. In other words she is a complete bedaubs! Selene even teaches Jim a few things such as after the first time they are attacked together she asks Jim if he got zombie blood in his eyes or mouth. Selene then proceeds to tell Jim that if someone is bitten then you only have a short period of time to kill that person before they turn. Selene shows Jim her ways and even saves his ass every once and a while. The positive views towards the females in the film are apparent and wouldn’t be surprised if female viewers were to shout muff Go Girl† a few times throughout the movie! To contrast, these positive views kind of disappear in the second half of the film. As the group makes it to the military stronghold the Major Henry West informs Jim that he had promised all of his men women if they were to send out a radio broadcast about their location. After Jim is informed is when things shift downwards in terms of social attitudes towards female at least for this part of the film. It is night and day when comparing the views towards females from the first half of the film to the second. In the first half Selene is a zombie killer with a ton of different skills that she uses in order to survive. In the second half Selene and Hanna are nothing but sex dolls for the soldiers at the strong hold to play with. The soldiers begin to harass and inappropriately touch Selene and Hanna to the point where zombies aren’t the only things they should be afraid of anymore. At one point the horny soldiers think it would be a good idea to get Selene and Hannah all dressed up n extravagant dresses to make them look even more appealing. Hannah and Galena’s stay at the makeshift military base is not a pleasant one to say the least. 28 Days Later also does a fantastic Job at illustrating what life would be like after society has failed. At the very beginning of the film we see one of the test subjects being shown montages of global disaster and conflict. It seems that the film was trying to send us a message, and that message was if we as a society keep on the same track then the ending could be a disaster and something to similar to 28 Days later could become a reality. Some perspectives could see this opening scene as humanity being the tied up monkey watching these tragic events happen before our eyes and then facing death from the rage virus. 28 Days Later at the time was a misunderstood masterpiece where over time it has shifted into a classic film that revalidated the zombie genre. 28 Days Later will without a doubt go down as a classic film as it perfectly summed up how crazy our society is and what it could become if we aren’t careful. Danny Bayle and Alex Garland did a fantastic Job at putting this film together making it one of the best and most recognizable zombie films of my generation! How to cite Days later analysis, Papers

The company has greater acceptance in the Australian market however; they are not able to get success in the global market and expand their business ("Bulla, made with care and shared with love | Bulla Dairy Foods", 2016). The business objective of the company is to provide quality product to their customer that also concern about the health and wellbeing. Apart from that, the company is supporting the dairy farmers so that they provide better raw materials to the organization that will ultimately help to produce quality product for the customers. Strategic Issues of the Organization Operating a business in any segment will always have some issues regarding many aspects and Bulla Dairy is not any exception to that. Bulla Dairy also has lot of strategic issues in their organization that are hindering their business process that are discussed below. The first issue of the organization is the procurement of the raw materials from their supplier. The company is highly concerned with the quality of their product and they face several challenges to that. Different supplier provide different standard of products to the company and they have to evaluate the standards each time they procure their products (Hitt, Ireland Hoskisson, 2012). This type of operation in procurement involves wastage of time and affects the manufacturing process. Production becomes slow that directly affects the profitability of the organization. The second issue of the organization is the marketing of their products that is highly associated with the Australian sentiment. Due to the single direction of the marketing strategy, the company is unable to make business in the international market. Bulla Dairy also lacks to decide the target market in the global scenario. The third issue of the company is to create the competitive advantage as compared to their customer. The company is operating in a saturated market where many global brands are also competing therefore it is becoming difficult for them create a price advantage or process advantage (Cloutier, LeBaron Whittington, 2015). The forth strategic issue of the organization is the distribution system. The company has their own distribution system, which is not able to supply products in every corner of the country. Therefore, Bulla Dairy is depending on the third party logistics to make their product available. The company is unable to arrange the logistic plan because of area allocation problem. The fifth issue of the organization is the low productivity due to lack of capacity utilization. Due to the low productivity, the organization is losing the profitability as well as the market share, which is a threat to the business. Procurement The Company is facing one issue with the raw material procurement, which is very serious now. The procurement process involves the standard monitoring process to maintain the quality, which incurs lot of time and slows the production process. Primary activity Primary activity of the organization is associated with the basic and mandatory activities for the business. The company never compromise with the product quality and they try to sustain their business through this. Some of the primary activity of the organization is facing some issues that which is evident in the value chain analysis. Inbound logistics Inbound logistics of the organization is associated with the issues like slow process due to quality check during the procurement process. Most of the raw materials are standardized so that lesser time is expected to take. Operations Every department of the company is working well because of the smooth process between the departments. The delay of the process only happens due to the procurement issue otherwise every department performs well (Starik, Kanashiro, 2013). Outbound logistics Outbound logistics are the part of the business. the company has several trucks for the outbound logistics and they found it difficult to supply every corner of the country. The company has taken an initiative to improve the distribution system by involving third party logistics. Marketing and sales Marketing and sale of the company is not up to the mark because they are not adopting the current trend of the market. The company is selling only with the Australian sentiment, which is inhibiting the growth in the global market (Hair et al., 2012). Services The local customers are getting the service through the direct store and through mall. The mobile van of the company also sells their product in different parts of Australia however; the company has little concern to provide benefit to the global customers. Due to huge competition in the market Bulla dairy is not able to increase the cost therefore the profit margin on every product is very low (Ayag, Samanlioglu Bykzkan, 2013). Analysis of the Organization Pestle PESTLE Analysis Political The political environment of the business in Australia is good therefore; the company is able to operate their business with a sustainable manner. The international market does not have the same stability. However, Bulla dairy has to choose those countries for their business where political stability is better (Glover et al., 2014). Economical The economic environment of business is moderate in Australia. The economy of the country is stable and improving in terms of gross domestic product. The incidence of recession has affected the country badly however Australia has a great tourism market that ensure the business for Bulla Dairy. Social Social and cultural aspect is highly motivating for the business because Australians are very cooperative and support good activities. The international market has the diversity though it will support the business of Bulla Dairy. Technological The company has implemented various modern technologies in their manufacturing unit to enhance the quality and productivity. The automated machine of boiling and mixing has increased the speed of the production line. The company is also trying to reduce the procurement time through better technology (Henderson, Cheney Weaver, 2015). Legal Bulla Dairy is operating their business in a sustainable manner, which has helped them to operate their business in a legal way. Environmental Environmental factor has lot of impact on the Dairy business that directly affects the milk production. Several diseases inhibit the milk production and company has to bare the loss. Bulla Dairy is operating several animal health activities to increase awareness among the farmers. The company is also emphasizing to reduce the carbon footprint in their production process. Figure 2: PESTLE analysis of Bulla Dairy to (Source: Created by author) SWOT SWOT analysis Strength Bulla Dairy is one of the most renowned companies in the dairy industry who are operating their business for long time. Company owned distribution and sales network is the advantage for business. Weakness The company is restricted within the Australian region therefore international market remains unexplored. The market has become very competitive where most of the international brands are presence to make profit. The brand portfolio of the company is low and they do not have any diversified product. Opportunity Huge global market remain unexplored that can be tapped easily to increase the business. Economic stability has helped to increase the income level in a constant manner that has increased the buyer purchasing capacity (McDonald et al., 2014). Threat Cattle disease is the biggest threat for the company, which will cut the milk supply. Increased cost of production is a threat to the market competition. Technological problem can also inhibit the business productivity. Figure 3: SWOT analysis of Bulla Dairy (Source: Created by author) Five Force Model Figure 4: Porter's five-force model analysis to understand the strategic issues of Bulla Dairy (Source: Siegel, 2015) Threat of new Entry The dairy market is highly saturated in Australia however global market provides lot of opportunity in this business. The threat of new entrant in the market is moderate in the domestic market due to low profit margin. The segment also requires lot of knowledge and technology advancement to produce good quality product. Therefore, it is not easy to compete in this segment, which restricts the flow of new entrants (Wilhelm et al., 2016). Buyer power Buyer power is high because many options are available to them. Many companies are providing the similar product with similar quality and similar price. Therefore, company ahs to ensure that their products are available in the market to restrict substitutions (Klerkx Nettle, 2013). Threat of substitution The dairy market has become saturated in Australia and many global and local companies are operating their business with similar products. To get the competitive advantage most of the companies reduce their price therefore threat of substitution is very high in the market. Supplier power The cattle farming is good business in Australia therefore many milk supplier is available in the market however standard is not equal. The quality supplier is less and they charge high price. The capacity of the supplier is also good therefore need of multiple suppliers is also less (Gollnow et al., 2014). Since there is less number of quality suppliers, therefore the company has less option that restricts supplier substitution. The power of supplier is very high in terms of quality. Competitive rivalry The number of competitors in the market is high therefore, company is not able to increase the price. In terms of quality, most of the companies are in the same position and customers understand that. Cost differentiation becomes difficult because of the competitive pricing and low profit. Analysis of the Strategic Issues VIRO Analysis VIRO analysis Value Bulla dairy manufacture products in their own factory, which always look for quality product and then supply through their own logistics to ensure availability that creates a high value for their products to their customers. Imitation The products are easily imitable and any other company can make similar products for their customers. Most of the popular flavors are copied by the competitors and produce similar effect in the market. Rare The range of products they produce is high and many rare products are available which is rarely available to the competitors. Organization All the factories of the company is in the same location and run by the same management. Therefore, uniformity is maintained in the organization. The sales and marketing is also operated under the same corporate office, which helped to reduce the strategic issues at the early stage. Figure 5: VIRO analysis of Bulla Dairy (Source: Grunert Traill, 2012) Recommendations Bulla dairy has to change their system of procurement to maintain the speed of production. Company can easily set a unit, which will be responsible to check the standard in the suppliers premises therefore the quality checking process will become faster. The marketing of the company should change the tag line to attract more number of global customers. The marketing should meet the local requirement whereas standard will remain according to the global standard. The company is not able to increase the productivity according to the industry standard. Apart from that, the cost of production is also high. The involvement of technology and increased productivity will help the company to increase the competitive advantage in the market. Bulla dairy should do the entire distribution through third party that will reduce the cost of transportation as well as few functional departments, which will enhance the productivity. The increased responsibility on each employee will help to utilize the resources properly to increase productivity. Conclusion Bulla Dairy is operating their business for long time in the market, which has developed many strategic issues within the organization. The overall analysis of the business is good and they operate in a stable environment and economy where competition is also high. Most of the time the company face the cost advantage problem whereas international brands are gaining profit. The company also has problem in their operational activity. The improvement in the procurement regarding quality check is very important. The process is becoming slower due to delay in quality checking. The report suggests finishing this process in the supplier premises that will save the time in the factory. The other issue of the company is the distribution that needs to be done through third party to gain the cost advantage over the competitors. The repost also emphasize on the business environment where buyers power is very high because of several competitors available in the market. In spite of several issues in the organization, Bulla Dairy is operating good business that can be improved in future. References Aya, Z., Samanlioglu, F., Bykzkan, G. (2013). Colleges May Consider College Application Essay Sample

Colleges May Consider College Application Essay SampleAn essay writing sample is the best way to gauge whether a college admissions officer will consider your application. With the colleges of the nation still being overly concerned with grades and standardized test scores, a college application essay sample can tell them just how much you care about what you are applying for. A well-written essay has a wonderful way of making your reader believe that you are definitely serious about applying for college. The best college application essay sample should contain information about your interests, as well as any professional experience you may have had. College admissions officers have different standards when they compare applications, so even though you may have done something for your community or family, do not go too overboard with it. It is best to focus on things that would suit you and the university you are applying to.A college applicant is required to supply some sort of infor mation in a college application. In most cases, applicants must list their major, graduate school, undergraduate degree, and possibly volunteer work. Each college has different guidelines when it comes to the amount of information they need to see from the applicant, so be sure to read them before you submit your application. An essay showing some professional background will make your application stand out from all the others. If you feel like you could be getting an interview, giving a concise and informative summary of your accomplishments and your professional history would be helpful. The important thing to remember about a college application is that the more professional and valuable it is, the better chance you have of being accepted into college. Because it is based on information that you put into a college application, the first thing a college admissions officer will look at is the college essays you submitted, and not the letter. Also, it is best to have your college admis sion officer consider your college application essay sample as one part of the overall application. An essay sample alone is not enough to make you unique from the other applicants; it must be coupled with the rest of the application. If you submit an essay sample but it does not come up as part of the application, it may have little impact on a college admission officer's decision. The first step to getting accepted into college is filling out the proper college application. With a well-written college application, your college admissions officer would see that you cared enough about what you were applying for to provide it in writing. Do not give them the impression that you did not take the time to put together a college application because you did not want to waste time on it.

Conventional Veterinary Medicine vs Holistic Veterinary Medicine Essays

Conventional Veterinary Medicine vs Holistic Veterinary Medicine Essays Conventional Veterinary Medicine vs Holistic Veterinary Medicine Essay Conventional Veterinary Medicine vs Holistic Veterinary Medicine Essay There is always lots of talk and discussion about the difference between conventional veterinary medicine and holistic veterinary medicine. Conventional medicine has been around for many years whereas holistic medicine is recently becoming a big thing that pet owners are now turning to. Although the two are working towards the same goal, to better an animal’s life, the two are very different. There is no real research on when exactly conventional veterinarian medicine started. We do know who the father of veterinary medicine is, this would be Dr. Claude Bourgelat. He founded the first modern school of veterinary medicine in Lyon, France in 1862. (Baker, 1992-2013 ). Holistic medicine is just now starting to become popular with pet owners, as they are turning to new ways to care for their pet when they think conventional medicine is too harsh. Conventional veterinary medicine often times does not look at the whole of the animal. It’s often about symptoms and treating them. If your cat is vomiting they may prescribe centrine to stop it or if there is diarrhea, a medication that is synthetically made is prescribed for that. When symptoms persist even with meds then veterinarians will become more aggressive with medications to find a cure. Usually beginning with blood work, x-rays, urine samples and so forth. With synthetically made medicines, you sometimes run the risk of having side effects, and at times the Vet could possibly misdiagnose an illness and prescribe the wrong medication for the animal. Holistic medicine tends to look at the animal as a whole, and not just look at the symptoms. Instead of looking at just the parts of the body that are sick, they look at the whole body of the animal, and attempts to restore health in the emotional, mental, and physical states. Holistic veterinarians believe that there is toxic stress from many things in an animal’s life. Whether it be from environmental or nutritional stresses, they believe the whole animal should be looked at. There are many different types of medicine in the conventional veterinary world. They prescribe medications for anxiety, and depression as well as  medications for the everyday problems such as colds and allergies. When the animal is found with a type of cancer or tumor, there are very harsh approaches to attacking it. They use the same treatments that humans use, like radiation and chemo on your animals. Some of these medications and treatments can cause your pet side effects like vomiting, tiredness, and soreness. None the less, they are made to treat an illness and typically work. Holistic practices look at the animal as a whole. Meaning they will treat the whole animal and not just look at the animals symptoms. Holistic veterinary care involves many conventional and unconventional routes. They will look at the animals behavior, mental state, diet and nutrition, past health history, symptoms and your relationship with your pet. They want the whole picture. Could the animal’s sickness be stress related, anxiety, is it behavioral and so on. Holistic treatments tend to be less invasive and natural. Treatments can include the following. Acupuncture, acupressure, Chinese medicine, behavioral modification, herbal medicine, massage therapy, music therapy, mega-nutrients, augmentation therapy, nutritional therapy and chiropractic care. It can even get into Reiki, which is the simple use of your hands and touch. If a patient arrives in a conventional veterinary’s office with signs of gagging, respiratory difficulty, snoring or exercise intolerance chances are they have brachycephalic. Brachycephalic airway syndrome (BAS) is a congenital disorder resulting from primary conformational defects, which obstruct flow of air through the upper airways. (Johnson, 2010) The vet will recommend weight reduction of the patient then they will do a surgery to correct lesions, and also will resection the soft palate. When a patient with the same symptoms appears at a holistic veterinarian’s office, treatment is much different. Instead of surgery, the vet will prescribe a low dose of antibiotics along with other doses of Chinese herbs or appropriate nutrients. One of the Chinese herbs that are prescribed is Houttuynia. It possesses antimicrobial effects, and is useful against both bacteria and some viruses. It increases phagocytic activity of white blood  cells, which can help clear pathogens. (Paula Jo Broadfoot, 2008) This is a less invasive way to treat the patient with natural medications. Conventional veterinarians are less likely to use acupuncture on patients. When a patient arrives with a type of joint problem caused by osteoarthritis, conventional veterinarians most often turn to a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids. Holistic practices will attempt acupuncture and different herbs. They believe the acupuncture will relieve some of the stress on the joints, and relax the patient so that over time they will no longer be in pain.

Ken Kesey, Novelist and Hero of 1960s Counterculture

Ken Kesey, Novelist and Hero of 1960s Counterculture Ken Kesey was an American writer who attained fame with his first novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. He helped define the 1960s as both an innovative author and a flamboyant catalyst of the hippie movement. Fast Facts: Ken Kesey Born: September 17, 1935, in La Junta, ColoradoDied: November 10, 2001 in Eugene, OregonParents: Frederick A. Kesey and Geneva SmithSpouse: Norma Faye HaxbyChildren: Zane, Jed, Sunshine, and ShannonEducation: University of Oregon and Stanford UniversityMost Important Published Works: One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest (1962), Sometimes a Great Notion (1964). Known For: In addition to being an influential author, he was the leader of the Merry Pranksters and helped launch the 1960s counterculture and hippie movement. Early Life Ken Kesey was born September 17, 1935, in La Junta, Colorado. His parents were farmers, and after his father served in World War II, the family moved to Springfield, Oregon. Growing up, Kesey spent much of his time in the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and camping with his father and brothers. He also became involved in sports, especially high school football and wrestling, exhibiting a fierce drive to succeed. He picked up a love of storytelling from his maternal grandmother and a love of reading from his father. As a child he read typical fare for American boys at the time, including western tales by Zane Grey and the Tarzan books of Edgar Rice Burroughs. He also became an ardent fan of comic books. Attending the University of Oregon, Kesey studied journalism and communications. He excelled as a collegiate wrestler as well as at writing. After graduating from college in 1957, he won a scholarship to a prestigious writing program at Stanford University. Kesey married his high school girlfriend, Fay Haxby, in 1956. The couple moved to California for Kesey to attend Stanford and fell into a lively crowd of artists and writers. Classmates of Kesey included writers Robert Stone and Larry McMurtry. Kesey, with his outgoing and competitive personality, was often the center of attention and the Kesey house in a neighborhood called Perry Lane became a popular gathering place for literary discussions and parties. The atmosphere at Stanford was inspiring. Teachers in the writing program included authors Frank OConnor, Wallace Stegner, and Malcolm Cowley. Kesey learned to experiment with his prose. He wrote a novel, Zoo, which was based on the bohemian residents of San Francisco. The novel was never published, but it was an important learning process for Kesey. To make extra money while in graduate school, Kesey became a paid subject in experiments studying the effects of drugs on the human mind. As part of the US Army studies, he was given psychedelic drugs, including lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), and instructed to report on its effects. After ingesting the drugs and experiencing profound effects, Keseys writing was transformed, as was his personality. He became fascinated with the potential of psychoactive chemicals, and began experimenting with other substances. Success and Rebellion While working a part-time job as an attendant in a mental ward, Kesey was inspired to write what became his breakthrough novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, published in 1962. One night, while taking peyote and observing patients in the mental ward, Kesey conceived the story of the inmates in a prison mental hospital. The narrator of his novel, the Native American Chief Broom, sees the world through a mental haze influenced by Keseys drug experiences. The protagonist, McMurphy, has feigned mental illness to avoid laboring on a prison work farm. Once inside the asylum, he finds himself subverting the rules imposed by the institutions rigid authority figure, Nurse Ratched. McMurphy became a classic American rebel character. A teacher from Stanford, Malcolm Cowley, had given him editorial advice, and with Cowleys guidance Kesey turned undisciplined prose, some of it written while under the influence of psychedelics, into a powerful novel. One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest was published to positive reviews and Keseys career seemed assured. He wrote a another novel, Sometimes a Great Notion, the story of an Oregon logging family. It wasnt as successful, but by the time it was published Kesey had essentially moved beyond mere writing. The theme of rebellion vs. conformity became a central theme in both his writing and his life. The Merry Pranksters By 1964 he had gathered a collection of eccentric friends, dubbed the Merry Pranksters, who experimented with psychedelic drugs and multi-media art projects. That year, Kesey and the Pranksters traveled across America, from the West Coast to New York City, on a garishly painted converted school bus they named Further. (The name was originally misspelled as Furthur, and appears that way in some accounts.) Dressed in colorful patterned clothes, a few years before hippie fashion became widely known, they naturally attracted stares. That was the point. Kesey and his friends, which included Neal Cassady, the prototype for Dean Moriarity in Jack Kerouacs novel On the Road, delighted in shocking people. Merry Pranksters on Further, their fabled bus, in San Franciso, 1965. Getty Images Kesey had brought along a supply of LSD, which was still legal. When the bus was pulled over by the police on several occasions, the Pranksters explained they were filmmakers. The drug culture that would scandalize America was still a few years in the future, and the cops seemed to shrug off the Pranksters as something akin to eccentric circus performers. An official from the Smithsonian was quoted as saying it was not a typical bus, adding Its historical context is important for what it meant to the literary world of a certain generation. The original bus, the article noted, was at that time rusting away in an Oregon field. It never was acquired by the Smithsonian, though Kesey at times pranked reporters into believing he was preparing to drive it cross-country and present it to the museum. The Acid Tests Back on the West Coast in 1965, Kesey and the Pranksters organized a series of parties they called The Acid Tests. The events featured the ingestion of LSD, bizarre films and slide shows, and free-form rock music by a local band, which soon began calling itself the Grateful Dead. The events became notorious, as did a party at Keseys ranch in La Honda, California, which was attended by other counterculture heroes, including poet Allen Ginsberg and journalist Hunter S. Thompson. Kesey became the heroic main character of journalist Tom Wolfes deeply reported chronicle of the San Francisco hippie scene, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. The Wolfe book solidified Keseys reputation as a leader of the burgeoning counterculture. And the basic pattern of the acid tests, exuberant parties with rampant drug use, rock music, and light shows, set a pattern which became standard in rock concerts for years. Kesey was arrested for possession of marijuana and briefly fled to Mexico to avoid going to jail. When he returned, he was sentenced to six months on a prison farm. Once released he backed off from active involvement in hippie adventures, settled with his wife and children in Oregon, and joined his relatives in the dairy business. Author Ken Kesey at a 1991 public reading. Getty Images   When the film of One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest became a hit in 1975, Kesey objected to how it had been adapted. However, the film was wildly successful, sweeping the 1976 Oscars with five awards, including Best Picture. Despite Keseys refusal to even watch the film, it propelled him from his quiet life on an Oregon farm back into the public eye. Over time he began writing and publishing again. His later novels were not as successful as his first one, but he regularly attracted a devoted following at public appearances. As something of a hippie elder statesman, Kesey continued to write and give speeches until his death. Ken Kesey died in Eugene, Oregon, on November 10, 2001. His obituary in The New York Times called him the Pied Piper of the hippie era and a magnetic leader who had been a bridge between the Beat writers of the 1950s and the cultural movement that began in San Francisco in the mid-1960s and spread across the world.
